Your BIGGEST Enemy in Productivity

There you are right in the middle of a workday, getting things done, being very productive. And the phone rings, what do you do? What do you do?

You were right in the middle of a really good productive session. You’re getting things done. Your brain is working it and the ideas are coming. You’re about to save the world when the phone rings.

Do me a favor. Don’t answer it, don’t answer the phone. That’s what voicemail is for now.

Granted, if your job is to answer the phone, then obviously that’s what you’re going to do.

But I’m talking about when you’re working, when you’re focused on things, when you’re doing that task, even if you’re exercising…don’t answer the phone.

Most phone calls are not that important. The questions are just distractions. It’s someone else barging in on you and saying, “pay attention to ME!” If you have kids you know this feeling all too well.

You can have the phone there and see who it is and if it’s something or somebody that you need to answer then by all means answer it. If it’s the boss, if it’s the husband or the wife, if it’s somebody you need to answer like, my kid is calling me, then yes; answer the phone.

If somebody calls me and I don’t know who they are, they’re going to voicemail anyway. Number one; I don’t know who they are, and I probably don’t want to talk to them anyway. Number two; I don’t want to be distracted from what I am doing right now.

If somebody really wants to get ahold of you, they are going to get a hold of you.

There are so many ways that people can get ahold of you. But here’s the thing we’ve been trained that when the phone rings, when the email pops up, when the thing dings and we get a message that we need to respond immediately, 90% of the time, you don’t need to respond immediately.

But when that interruption happens it pulls your focus off the task at hand and it takes time to get back into it. When you take your brain out of that mode that you are in, it takes you at least three to five minutes to get back into that mode. IF you can get back into that mode!

So, don’t let these distractions keep you from doing so much more.
